Learning to Sing
As a student and an educator of multiple instruments, I have found many similarities when learning and teaching different disciplines. For me, the common thread between all instruments is vibration and understanding where sound resonates and how to harness and control it. Interestingly, for me the final step towards being truly in control of your voice, is letting go.
Moreover, once we are understand the importance of FEELING sound we can learn to connect it to our expressive self.
When dealing with their voice, many people have a misperception about the learning process. While we believe we can learn an instrument by practicing diligently, many believe incorrectly that we are either born with or without an ability to sing.
I use techniques that treat the voice as an instrument. The essential practice involves feeling sound vertically and horizontally in our bodies and learning to use our breath as the core motor of that moves our vocal cords and quiets our mind. While many people want to learn to have a distinctive, "styled" voice, I believe that it is most essential to develop your natural voice, and that the stylization will develop effortlessly once these fundamentals have been internalized.
