Figuring out chords for the melodies you hear in your head can be a daunting task. The harmonization chart below can be extremely valuable. While it is important to understand the logic behind the chart, just playing the chords in a specific key can get your ear moving into new places, breaking loose new ideas and spurring creative outbursts. What's so cool about the pentatonic scale?
Did you know that the pentatonic scale has existed in all cultures throughout history? The chinese related the pentatonic scale to the five elements of Taoism and in India each note of the major scale corresponds to a different shakra in the body. In the western music the pentatonic scale is the foundation of most of the melodies we hear. In any given key the notes of the pentatonic scale are the most related notes to that key. That means that if you were to play only the notes of the pentatonic scale, there would be no dissonant tones. This is not always good as many of us enjoy dissonant tones in music as they create colorful sounds. But if you know the pentatonic tones of any major or minor key, you know the most related (i.e. harmonic) tones of that key.
